At SMMIS every child is known and loved. When you join the SMMIS community you are enveloped into a family that is dynamic and diverse. We’ve stayed smaller by design to ensure that our core principles remain across our student body. This commitment to our core values empowers us to work deeply both at the individual and collective level. We stay connected through the flow of integrity, acceptance and academics. Our children engage with the world freely, with humility and curiosity, balancing grit with loving kindness and embracing the “grace of great things” ahead.
The centrality of education and ethical culture within Singapore’s pluralistic environment is a founding principle of the Jewish Community of Singapore that dates back to our earliest leaders, most notably our school’s benefactor - prominent philanthropist and businessman, Sir Manasseh Meyer (1846-1930). Sir Manasseh Meyer’s philanthropic efforts played a critical role in building Singapore’s elite education systems, including The National University of Singapore and SMMIS. To this day it is his generous trust that supports our school with the oversight of Singapore’s Jewish community leaders.
From its inception, The Jewish Community of Singapore has remained loyal and steadfast in its endeavour to cultivate curious minds and teach children to look beyond the horizon line so they understand ‘the world doesn’t end at Clifford Pier’. Our community believes in standing together with the rest of society. Collectively, we imagined a future where we could share the gift of Jewish values and culture, set against the backdrop of our cherished, peaceful, multicultural Singapore. In this way our school has always been driven by a clear vision and a moral purpose.
SMMIS is the only Jewish Primary and Secondary School in SouthEast Asia inclusive of a kindergarten and nursery, and the only International School in Singapore that began as an offshoot of grass roots community efforts.
In 1996 Mrs. Simcha Abergel launched the country’s first early childhood Jewish education programme in her home, leading to the establishment of the Ganenu (Our Garden) Learning Centre. Simcha planted deep, inclusive roots from the very start, in her living room, with the mission that a good school can support a child through anything, Simcha brought with her true courage to teach. To this day, as the Vice Principal and Head of Jewish Education at SMMIS, Simcha’s strong personal identity with its spiritual and emotional integrity cultivates wonder, excitement and enlightenment for all in her care.
When we relocated from New Zealand to Singapore, we carefully researched international schools, and SMMIS immediately stood out for its strong values, community-focused approach, and not-for-profit ethos. With four children in Grades 9, 8, 6 and 1, we wanted a school where each of them would feel seen and supported. The smaller school size made the transition much smoother, and every one of our children has settled in happily. We’ve been so impressed by the supportive teachers, the thoughtfully chosen IGCSE subjects, and the balance of academics, CCAs, and field trips that help them explore their interests and connect with the wider community. The facilities are excellent for the size of the school, and we love the inclusive way Jewish Education is presented, enriching students of all backgrounds. SMMIS has given our children a welcoming, nurturing environment, and as parents, we couldn’t be happier with the sense of care, belonging, and opportunity that the school provides.

I’ve been a student to SMMIS for 6 years and finished my last year here. What is so great about this school is the great environment it’s created and the opportunities it provides for students to grow. The schools’ Jewish values really makes the school special as it teaches us to grow into better people and it really makes good friends. SMMIS is unique in the sense that students really enjoy coming to school to learn, and they don’t fall behind because of the immense amount of attention that the teachers give the students, and that is what I love about this school.
Georgia - Class of 2023
SMMIS is more than just our children’s school, it is our community and “home away from home.” Since joining, we have been blown away with the ease with which our children have settled into school life at SMMIS. When moving to Singapore, we hoped to find a school with a family feel where we can be assured our three children will not only thrive academically, but where there is an importance placed on values. We found just that at SMMIS. We appreciate how there is an excellent teaching team which contributes to the development and awakening of our children with respect for values, kindness, good humour and well-being. We could not ask for more. The care and individual attention from the teachers have exceeded our expectations and most important of all, our three children love going to school every day! We highly recommend SMMIS.

You can say that SMMIS has been built outside-in, representing what we enjoy in Singapore. It brings people together from across all nationalities, ages, socio-economic backgrounds and puts their students at the centre. Welcome to the SMMIS family!

I've been a student in this amazing school for almost 2 years. I love the community, and the fact that I know everyone and everyone knows me. I love coming to school to meet all my friends, and to meet the teachers who make the lessons exciting.
Daksh - Grade 10
I was at SMMIS for 12 years, and the fact that I grew up with some of my classmates and knew all my teachers gave me a sense of empathy and kindness. Advocating for conflict resolution was something that the school embodies and something which I’m now very passionate about.
Asher - Class of 2023
Everyone’s kind and friendly here you feel a sense of community, and everyone is relatively new but makes everyone feel included and welcome. Football games are the best, we gather with children from all different levels, get to know them and become a little closer
Jacob- Grade 8
I like the teachers because they are very kind and them help me learn. I like to learn Chinese because it is fun and we learn through songs and dance.
Mia - Grade 1
Moving from a local school, we wanted a cozy, intimate and family-like community where our kids can feel like home. SMMIS stood out by far from our extended search and after 3 years, we can confidently say that we made the best decision. Our two daughters are growing in their confidence, kindness, creativity, curiosity and friendship through their education and excited to wake up in the morning to go to school. SMMIS teachers and staff have provided a solid and well-rounded foundation by instilling strong values to respect diverse cultures and spirit of learning. As parents, this is all we want to see. Thank you SMMIS community for providing a life-long journey of learning for my kids.
